Registrations have closed!

Networking Workshop slides uploaded here!

The workshop will be held across two sessions. The first session will offer participants an introduction to networking from the ground up, and also demonstrate certain interesting things that one could do. The second session is a hands-on session, and will cover topics in networking in detail in a laboratory environment.

Due to the overwhelming response for the workshop, we regret to announce that we cannot accommodate all registrants for the second session. All registrants can attend the first session of lectures and demonstrations. In order to select the participants for
the second session, a test will be conducted at the end of the first session. We will intimate the selected participants for the second session in a few hours after the test.

Session 1

In this session, we would have:

(i) Introductory lecture by Prof. Shankar Balachandran
(Dept of CSE, IIT Madras. http://www.cse.iitm.ac.in/~shankar/ )
(ii) Demonstration
(iii) Selection test for the second session

Session 2

This is a hands-on session where participants will be offered a laboratory environment for trying out things first hand. We hope to cover the following topics. There may be slight modifications during the actual session, based on time and feasibility.

  •   Basics of connecting to a local area network: ifconfig, route, dns
  •   The anatomy of a web request:  Analyzing HTTP, TCP, IP, ethernet packet traces using Wireshark
  •   Basics of iptables: Example. Setting up a NAT.
  •   Man in the middle attack: Various stages and tools
  •   Automated browsing with Curl
  •   A demonstration of traceroute and visualizations
  •   An interesting use case of HTTP server logs - hits analytics

On the spot confirmation of registration: March 5th 2010, 1:00pm

Session 1 (lectures and demos): March 5th 2010, 4:00pm to 8:00pm

Note: There will be a shortlisting test after the first session for the second session (this is because we do not have enough space for a hands on session with all of you).

If you don't get through, do not worry! There are other informative lectures which you can attend in that time.

Session 2 (Hands on): March 6th 2010, 8:00am to 12:00pm

Q. I have registered online for the workshop, do I have to register onsite also?
A Yes. You have to confirm you online registration at the hospitality desk on the day of the workshop at 1pm. Entry to the workshop will not be permitted unless you do so.

Q. At what level will the session 1 test be pitched at?
A. Due to the overwhelming number of registrants, we will pitch the test at a senior undergraduate level. We will focus on basic understanding of networking topics.

Q. Will I be allowed entry to the second session if I miss the first session?
A. Entry to the second session will be permitted to those who take the test and are contacted by the coordinators.

Q. I registered for the workshop. What do I do if I am not selected
for the hands-on session?
A. There are a couple of other interesting lectures on the morning of Saturday, 6th March. We highly regret that all registrants cannot be allowed for the hands-on session, due to the large response.
