Content

A) Session 1: Basic networking fundamentals

Aim of this session is to give the participants some basic knowledge about different hardware and protocols in a computer network. The participants will get to see the “protocols in action” by observing the sequence of messages exchanged between two protocol entities and causing protocols to perform certain actions and then observing these actions and their consequences. Major protocols from every layer in the OSI model will be covered namely:

Application Layer: HTTP, HTTPS, POP, SMTP, DNS, FTP

  • Difference between HTTP, HTTPS
  • Reading mails by capturing the POP protocol packets
  • Retrieving plain text passwords.
  • DNS resolution of URLs

Transport Layer: TCP ,UDP , TCP-SACK, TCP-FACK

  • TCP 3-way handshake
  • Comparing TCP to UDP
  • TCP Congestion Control (Optional)

Network Layer: IPV4, IPv6, RIP,NAT, OSPF, IGRP

  • IPv4 vs IPv6
  • Acquiring an IP address with DHCP
  • Address translation from local to global IP (Depends on resource availability)
  • Ping and Traceroute
  • Dynamic Routing Protocols (Depends on the availability of routers)

Link Layer: Ethernet, Wireless LANs, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), FDDI, STP,DTP,CDP

  • Ethernet Hub vs Switch
  • Capturing Wireless traffic and its prevention using WEP keys
  • Duplicate mac addresses in a network, spoofing

B) Session 2: Advanced Audience

  • Fingerprinting the network using nmap
  • Remotely injecting exploits into vulnerable PC through metasploit (Optional and Dangerous!)

Dates

March 5th: Evening
